ספר שיצא לאחרונה בברזיל – Drugs and Culture: New Perspectives – מנסה לבחון את תופעת ה”סמים” (מרכאות במקור) באופן מקיף ומעמיק יותר מאשר ההיסטריה העיוורת בה נוקטות מדינות רבות, בכללן ישראל. הספר הוא תוצאה של כנס בשם זה שנערך על-ידי המרכז לחקר חומרים פסיכואקטיביים (NEIP) בתמיכת משרד התרבות הברזילאי. בספר מכונסים מאמרים רבים אשר מנסים להתבונן בתופעה מתוך מגוון של פרספקטיבות אנתרופולוגיות, פסיכולוגיות, אתנולוגיות והיסטוריות.
את ההקדמה לספר כתב המוזיקאי ג’ילברטו ג’יל, ששימש כשר התרבות של ברזיל בין השנים 2003-2008. ג’יל כותב בין השאר:
We need to demarcate in a more attentive manner the relationships between use, consumption, trafficking and the individual rights of Brazilian citizens. Maybe we should rethink and reconsider the relationship between the State, drugs, and individual rights. This may well be an indispensable step towards the maturation of public policies regarding "drugs."
… far from being a mere link in the chain of violence and crime, the consumption of "drugs" has forever been a part of various spheres of human life, being tied to religious phenomena, movements to construct (or reconstruct) the identities of social, ethnic, generational and gender minorities, and even to esthetic production.
… For better or worse, "drugs" comprise part of our culture, or better yet, our cultures, and hence cannot be understood apart from them. … This diversity of the use and consumption of drugs is a mirror of our own cultural diversity. Our researchers and our legislature should, in some manner, take into consideration the cultural dimension in order to craft public policies that are more efficacious and more adequate for our country today.
ג’יל עצמו התנסה בעבר, יחד עם חברו המוזיקאי קאיטנו ולוסו, בתה הפסיכדלי איאואסקה. מקורו של משקה מקודש זה בטקסים שאמאניים של שבטי האמזונס, והוא ממשיך לשמש גם כיום בברזיל בטקסים פסיכדליים וכמרכזן של כנסיות המוקדשות לעבודה רוחנית באמצעותו, כמו כנסית סנטו דאימה. החוויות העמוקות שעבר ג’יל היוו השראה לשירים שכתב בהמשך דרכו, וחיזקו את תפיסת עולמו הפלורליסטית והאנושית. אפשר רק להתקנא בממשלה שאלה הם שריה. מתי נזכה לראות אצלנו שר שתפיסת עולמו עוצבה במסעות תודעתיים ארוכים לתוך הלילה?
